What If I
Don’t Make The Scramble?
Without everything in line to graduate, chances are you
may not even make the scramble. From
personal experience, I suggest not to waste your time trying to find one or to even
participate in the scramble, because they just don’t want to even look at you
until your scores are in already.
Residencies don’t like to wait for anyone. They want who’s most ready, and there are many that are more
ready than you are, if you don’t have passing scores in yet. Just start doing research or start up an
externship or some kind of experience to put on your resume until you have
everything in to prove to them that you are a medical school graduate.
So after your scores come in, then start looking. You can look before hand, but other more
ready people may put in their application first so then your time was
wasted. As long as you have this
website, you have everything you need at your fingertips for when you get to
that point.
There are many resources out there that advertise open
positions. The following links may be
helpful. Check them along your search,
as some report residency openings. Make
a folder of your favorite links and check those for openings as you need to.

Building your Resume While Waiting For Residency:
If you can’t find a residency, it may be good to do something
in the meantime to build your resume.
Possibilities:
Externship, observership, mini residency, PhD (post-doc), M.S., MBA,
post-doc research, or pre-residency fellowships such as those found in the
SFMatch.
If you do an externship at a hospital you wish to get
into, your chances of getting in that residency are greatly increased if you do
an excellent job there.
Residency and Externship Coordinating Services: - you can
hire someone to do the work for you.
However, it’s best to do this after you’ve tried to do things yourself
first.
www.clinical-coordinators.com - coordinate clinical rotations for medical
students and externships for M.D.’s.
Good for IMG’s.
www.IMGI.org - a
consultation service that aids with match, postmatch, personal statements, and
interviews. Very costly.
www.imgexperts.com
- give minimal requirements such as minimum USMLE scores, minimum Visa
requirements, etc. for U.S. residency
positions. Costs $ to buy these lists.
Truesdale
Associates – Helps IMG’s obtain position in residency program. Can sign up around the bottom of the page.
Clerkships for Med students:
Check the hospitals where you would like to do them at,
call the director and ask them. Some of
them require at least a 3 to 6 month advance application to their program, so
make sure you plan it all out early.
Search the web and call a few places. You may find something.
Also try the Externships listed below. They may allow medical students also.

Research
Most residency programs prefer you did
externships/observerships; however, a little research here and there won’t
hurt. It may actually get you connected
into the system if your research director is the head of the department is
connected with the department of your choice.
Call any hospital you want and there’s likely to be at
least a small research program.
Usually, you have to call the head of the department that you want to
work in. Here are a few good places.
NIH – National Institute
of Health
Johns Hopkins University
Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital, NY
Cleveland Clinic, OH
Norwalk Hospital, CT (affil with Yale)

If you feel you have possibly 2 years of wait, you may
want to start a PhD. , and if you have time left still looking for residency
you can resume your degree work along with research. If you’d like to go into research eventually anyways,
then this may be the best route to take. If not, try to avoid it and go more
into clinical work.
